JUNE 2013
22nd | The Department of Fashion Technology & Costume Designing organized an Inter - Departmental Mehandi Kondattam for all UG Students on 22.6.2013. As usual the Department of Fashion Technology & Costume Designing with the help of senior students accorded a warm welcome to the new entrants by adorning their hands with "Mehandi" Designs. This Mehandi Kondattam establishes a good rapport between the senior and junior students of various disciplines. About 150 senior students decorated the palms of 1500 junior students with intricate motifs. While traditional mehandi designs cropped up here and there, the Arabic designs are all the rage. This creative reception helped the first year students to shed their inhibitions and make fast friends with seniors. The event is also a learning experience for the juniors about mehandi application techniques; for seniors, it is an opportunity to display their skills. | ![]() |
24 to 28 | The Department of English conducted a Bridge Course in English for the Newcomers from 24.6.2013 to 28.6.2013. The Resource Persons were Prof. G. Balakrishnan, Former Vice - Principal and Head, Department of English, St. Joseph's College, Trichy and Mr. S. Mahendra Prabu, Assistant Professor, Department of Management Studies. The Main objective of the course was to motivate the students to develop positive thinking and interest towards spoken English. The resource persons spoke about the significance of the Bridge Course which is an opportunity to become familiar with English language and also advised the students to develop self-confidence. They also emphasizzed the importance of etiquette for students in all walks of their life. | ![]() |
29th | National Service Scheme, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Consumer Behaviour, Tiruchirappalli and National Service Scheme, Shrimati Indira Gandhi College Jointly organized an Awareness Programme on "Food Protection and Quality Assurance Act" on 29.6.2013. Thiru. David Muthuraj, Food Safety Officer, Tiruchirappalli Corporation was the Chief Guest.
He explained about the customer rights, quality of products their price, manufacturing date, expiry date and how to find out the fake ones. |

JULY 2013
6th | The Department of Fashion Technology & Costume Designing conducted an Inter-Departmental Competition on "Hair Dressing" at Vidya Seva Ratnam K.Santhanam Auditorium on 6.7.2013. Around 55 students of various disciplines participated in the competition. Mrs. Malathi Prabhakaran, Cantonment Ladies Club, Trichy was the judge for the competition.
The participants dressed with various hair styles like traditional wear, party wear, bridal wear, Casual wear, French roll, Macram Knot, Birds nest, etc., This competition paved the way for the students to exhibit their hidden talents. The best participants were awarded prizes. |

8th | The Department of Management Studies conducted a Day - Long Placement Training Programme on "Talentism" on 8.7.2013. Shri. Ravindran Sambandham, Director and Thiru. G. Senthil Kumar, Manager, Human Resources Nokia India Private Limited, Chennai was the Chief Guest. He ignited a new sparkle that was potent enough to kindle the passion for leadership in the students. Attributing talentism as a new capitalism the entire training had been modular as visual presentations encapsulated under different themes such as Art, Philosophy, passion, purpose, winning eye, Discovering the strength. There is nothing secret about the secret of success and when going gets tough, the tough gets going. The entire session sensitized the students' goal focus. | ![]() |
10th | The Department of Management Studies, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India and The Institute of Cost Accountants of India jointly organized an "Investor Awareness Programme" on 10.7.2013. Dr.CMA.T.K.Sridhar, Cost Accountant gave be an Investments are deceitful business investments, named after "Charles Ponzi' who fleeced away huge money from the public by insighting dubious investments to illegitimate business. The presentation was helpful in identifying good investment avenues. He enlighted the students with the caption "Make money work for you instead of working for money". This programme has thrown light on the investment avenues which lure the investors by promising attractive returns. 17th | The Department of Hospital Administration and National Service Scheme conducted an Awareness Programme on "How to prevent Diabetes Mellitus" on 17.7.2013. Dr. P. AUGUST 2013
1st | The inauguration of all Associations, Installation of the Office Bearers of the College Union, Distribution of Book Bank Cards to the Physically Challenged Students and the Valediction of the Bridge Course was held at 11.00a.m. on 1.8.2013 in the R.V. Auditorium. The Chief Guest was Mrs. Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager, Trichy Division. In her address she laid stress on women's emancipation by asking them to develop self confidence to face day to day life. She also spoke about the safety measures to be adopted by the young girls wherever they are. Earlier she installed the Office Bearers for this academic year (2013 - 2014). She also distributed the book bank cards to three physically challenged students. She then gave away the certificates for the participants of the Bridge Course. Prof. G. Balakrishnan, Retired Vice principal. St. Joseph's College and the Co-ordinator for the Bridge Course offered felicitations.

6th | The Department of Physics conducted a Lecture Programme on "Growth Organic, Inorganic and Semi Organic Single Crystals for Technological Applications" on 6.8.2013. Dr. N. Vijayan, Scientist, National Physical Laboratory (CSIR, Govt. of India), New Delhi was the Chief Guest. He started his lecture with the introduction to various crystal growth methods such as solution, vapour and melt techniques. He elaborated the concepts based on piezoelectric single crystals, bridgmann Technique, CZOCHRALSKI method, Non-Linear single crystals and uses of single crystals by quoting day to day examples with the help of various slides. He concluded his lecture by mentioning the areas of applications of single crystals in making quartz watches, artificial diamonds, solar cells, laser cutting tools, detectors in medical field and society-oriented applications like mosquito mats and low power lasers. | ![]() |

7th | The Department of Microbiology conducted an Inter-Departmental Competition on "Fireless Cooking - Salad preparation" on 7.8.2013. Dr. Celin Rajendrasingh, Retd. Professor & Head, Department of Botany, Holy Cross College and Mrs. Sumathi Muruganantham, Principal, Genius Play School were the judges. In the present days, instead of hygienic and nutritious food prepared at home, children look for fast foods which has no value. Keeping this in view the students were asked to prepare a variety of dishes. 74 students presented their salads with fruits, vegetables, greens etc., Among these chocolate fruit salad, milk shake with salad, puffed rice salad, vegetable salad, icecream salad were unique in taste. | ![]() |
7th | The Department of Mathematics conducted a Lecture Programme on "Three Fundamental Theorems in Banach Space Theory" on 7.8.2013. Dr. S. Lalithambigai, Assistant Professor, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai was the Chief Guest. She started her lecture with a brief introduction about last upper bound property, completeness property and banach space. Then she proceeded with the three fundamental theorems of Banach space - open mapping theorem, uniform boundedness principle and closed graph theorem. 8th | The Department of Fashion Technology & Costume Designing conducted an "Inter - Departmental Saree Draping Competition for the students of various disciplines on 8.8.2013. 55 students from all the departments participated in the Competition. The participants used cotton, silk, synthetic and Designer Saree and exhibited their talents and Creativity in different styles like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarath, Marathi, Malaysia and Srilanka This saree parade paved the way to improve the creativity of the students and their involvement towards our culture. By this competition the younger generation also realized the importance and elegance of saree wearing. 8th | The Career Guidance and Placement Cell conducted a Lecture Programme on "Development of Soft Skills" on 10.8.2013. Ms. M. Bharani, Lecturer, Department of Biochemistry was the Chief Guest. She in her Lecture Programme, explained the importance of knowledge, emotion and passion. She also gave some topics for group discussion.
The Department of English conducted an "Elocution, Essay and Poetry writing Competition" for all the I Year UG Students on 10.8.2013. The UG students nearly 25 in number competed with one another and excelled in the contests. The following were the Prize Winners :- The Department of Yoga organized a Demonstration on Yoga on 10.8.2013 in the presence of Dr.K.Meena, Former Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, Trichy, Shri. S. Savari Muthu was the Chief Guest. He explained how yoga, increases the energy level. By spending less energy one can gain more energy. It is easy to obtain strength for life and make all glands function perfectly. Yoga helps to have a sound mind and sound body. The yoga art helps to attain perfection in Education which develops discipline and good character. In the International level and in the medical field the Research on Yoga is successfully proved.Ms. K. Gomathi, Lecturer, Department of Yoga proposed the vote of thanks. |

She in her Lecture explained how to spot the error in sentences with examples. The Department of English conducted a Special Lecture Programme on "Job Opportunities in the field of Media" on 4.8.2013. Mr. R. Kumar, Senior News Editor, 'Dinamalar', Chennai was the Chief Guest. He gave an insight about journalism and the various job opportunities open for those who wish to pursue it. The youth of today are faced with so many options open to take up as their career. This lecture will be an eye-opner for our III Year students, who wish to take up media as their future plan. The means to catch up with this profession was very clearly briefed. The programme ended with an interaction with students. |

15th | The Independence Day was celebrated on 15.8.2013 in the college premises. Shri.Thotta P.V. Ramanujam, Our President hoisted the National Flag in the presence of the Secretary. Ms. B.Padmapriya, Lecturer in Tamil delivered the Independence Day Address in which she urged the students to be disciplined and patriotic. She gave several examples of patriotic women of the past to highlight her views. Two speeches in Tamil and one in English were delivered by the students. The celebrations came to an end with the distribution of Mementos to the Speakers and sweets to all. | ![]() |
19th | The Department of Chemistry conducted a Lecture Programme on "Electrochemistry and its application" on 19.8.2013. Dr. N. Mathiyalagan, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Jayaram Engineering College, Thuraiyur was the Chief Guest.

31st | Shrimati Indira Gandhi College has been founded with a mission to foster Higher Education and upliftment of women in society and with the aim to empower women to achieve economic independence in their life through employment. The college with a glorious history of 30 years has made rapid progress and has achieved NAAC Re-Accreditation at the A+ Level. As on date, the college offers 44 programmes of study at the UG, PG and Research levels and has earned a name as one of the premier educational institutions of Trichy. The Career Guidance and Placement cell of the college gives regular training to students by experts from the industry, for acquiring aptitude skills, technical and soft skills, gaining knowledge of various interviewing techniques and training on personality development, with the only mission of enabling as many students as possible to get placed in suitable positions relevant to their areas of study, every year. These programmes have helped the students in getting placed in various organizations, and industries. One such training programme was recently organized in association with Aharam services, Chennai in the college premises for the final year U.G and P.G students of Computer Science, Information Technology and Computer Applications. Around 400 U.G and P.G students attended the training programme. Mr. C.A. Sabarinath, Director, Aharam Services, Chennai provides facilities for arrangement of campus interviews, placement festivals/ drives and placement training programmes in colleges in South India. He also recruits students for various positions in the industry through interviews conducted on behalf of industries and organizations. Mr. J. Thulasi Dharan, is working in the Corporate Social Responsibility and Employee Engagement Department of MPhasis, Bangalore. He has four years of industry experience and has delivered training in personality development of students of Engineering colleges and Arts & Science Colleges in South India. During the session, the speaker motivated the students to communicate about themselves and their ideas about placement. He also provided them with specific inputs that helped them in getting awareness about employability skills needed for getting employed in industries, current trends in industry and technology and how to acquire these skills during their college life. He also cited several examples to help them learn how to manage situations in the corporate, how to conduct themselves before employers and how to develop a positive attitude to shine in their career. The programme was very useful to students. Students received a shift in their perception towards a career and getting placement. |

31st | The Valedictory Function of Indira Gandhi Memorial Inter - Collegiate Oratorical Contest in English and Tamil and Muthamizh Vizha was held on 31.8.2013 at 5.30p.m in the R.V. Auditorium. Shri.S.Kunjithapatham, Secretary, Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, Trichy welcomed the gathering. Ms. M. Rema Vice - Principal & Head, Department of English gave a brief Introduction about the programme. Giving away the prizes and cash awards to the winners, the chief guest Mr. R. Gunasekaran, Deputy Director, Fine Arts academy, Chennai delivered the special address and inspired the seats of the audience with his enchanting words and motivated the students to take part in the forthcoming competitions. The day was alive with the great performances of the students. The Overall shield exclusively for oratorical contest was bagged by the Sengamala Thaayar Educational Trust Women's College, Mannargudi and the Overall shield for Muthamizh Vizha was bagged by the Bharathidasan Constituent College, Orathanadu. Dr.S.Chitra, Gynecologist, Lalitha Nursing Home, Trichy was lighting the Kuthu Vizhakku and she gave a talk on "WISH" (Women In Sanitation and Hygiene), reproductive system and how to keep ourself clean during menstruation. In the Second session, Dr.Shaista Sivakumar, Head L&D, Kavery Group of Hospital, Trichy gave a topic on "Strategic Role of HR in Healthcare Industry". In the Third Session, Dr.R.Mathrubootham, Paediatrician, Lalitha Nursing Home, Trichy delivered a talk on "Newborn Care and Breast Feeding".In the Fourth Session, Dr.Rajmohan, Opthalmologist, Joseph Eye Hospital, Trichy, talk on "Lasers in Opthamology". He explained about the types of lasers, its uses, treatment and surgeries related to eyes and diabetes mellitus. In the Fifth Session, Dr.S.Srinivas, Physician & Diabetologist, Vijaya Hospital, Trichy, delivered a talk on "Obesity related to Cardiac Problems". He explained about obesity BMI values, various factors for obesity, stress and its risk, Heart disease, Gastro Intestinal diseases. In the Valediction function on 4.30 p.m in MCA A/C Seminar Hall. Dr. V.Jeyapal, Chairman, GVN Hospital, Trichy delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the students. 11th | On behalf of the fine arts club Onam celebrated on 11.9.2013. Students of various departments dressed themselves is Kerala Heritage costume and Pookolam ie. Floral decoration was made by the students. Kuthuvilakku was lighted by the students at the centre of the pookolam. 21st | The Department of Fashion Technology & Costume Designing and Entrepreneurship of Development Cell (EDC) conducted a Workshop on "Garland Making" for the students of various disciplines. Some of the students were trained by the faculty members of the department and they numbering around 120 were motivated to train 186 student participants. The participants were given training to the different types of flower arrangement using variety of flowers like rose petals, jasmines, zeribro, astress, golden rod etc., Artificial ribbon roses were added to the garland for decorative purpose together with the colour spray. This workshop helped to motivate the participant to become entrepreneurs. This also gave a chance for them to display their creative skills. | ![]() |

She explained the objectives of Research, "What is meant by ICT?. She insisted that the term ICT is used to refer to the convergence of Audio - Visual and telephone networks with Computer Networks through a single cabling or link system. She also discussed about Enhancement of Research & Development, Need of the hour, Academic Reputation, Industrial Academic Co-operation, Research Proposals and Qualitative Research. She highlighted the use of information and communication technology in the field of Socio economic development, international development and social work. She also explained about versatility of ICT and way, to reach out the world. She clarified the doubts raised by the students. The scholars found the session was highly informative and useful. |

28th | The Department of Biochemistry conducted an inter-departmental Exhibition on "Foods cooked with cereals" for the students of various disciplines on 28.9.2013.. The theme of the food exhibition was preparation of food items using traditional cereals such as Ragi, Oats, Maize, Corn, Black rice, Varagu, Handmade rice, Handmade rice flakes wheat, Barley etc., as one of the main ingredient.
Wholegrain cereals are a rich source of many essential vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Low in saturated fat but is a source of PUFA, including omega-3 linolenic acid high in both soluble and insoluble fibre, excellent source of carbohydrates, significant source of protein, a good source of B group vitamins, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Many minerals, such as iron, magnesium, copper, phosphorus and zinc are also present. Cereals and wholegrain foods can reduce the risk of developing certain diseases, including coronary heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, lower blood cholesterol levels and diverticular disease. More than 90 students from various departments participated and displayed their food items with its nutritional importance. The exhibition started at 11.00a.m. The staff members and students of various departments visited the exhibition and got benefited. The highlights of the food items displayed were Ragi panipuri, Ragidosa, Sweet kavuni Rice, Black rice pongal, wheat sundal, wheat payasam, ragi adai, ragi puttu, ragi boli. He gave demonstrations regarding patients having high blood pressure and low blood pressure and suggested first aid instructions to control the same. He also explained how to arrest the poison spreading throughout the body by venomous snake bites. How to escape from fire accidents occurring all of a sudden?
