About the college

Shrimati Indira Gandhi College is a Self-Financing Arts and Science College for women, affiliated to the Bharathidasan University. It was established in the year 1984. It has obtained UGC recognition under sections 2(f) and 12(b) in the year 1994. The programme M.B.A has been approved by AICTE. The college was re-accredited with the prestigious “A” Grade by NAAC for the third time in 2015.

Programmes offered

The college offers 16 UG programmes, 11 PG programmes, 7 M.Phil programmes, 7 Ph.D programmes, and 3 P.G.Diploma, 3 Diploma and 2 Certificate programmes. All programmes are Self-financed and follow the semester pattern and the choice based Credit System.

Staff profile

There are 208 teaching faculty, 48 non-teaching staff and 21 technical staff currently working in the campus. 15 Guest faculties in various disciplines visit the college to offer special lecture programmes. Adequate faculty is recruited and trained to handle classes. 60 members act as M.Phil. guides and 16 are Ph.D guides. Faculties gain knowledge and training in emerging areas of study by attending SWAYAM / NPTEL courses, ARPIT, sponsored workshops/ conferences / FDPs at national and international level and other training programmes arranged by the college. The college itself is a local chapter for SWAYAM. They are trained in preparation of CBTs, ICT – based teaching aids and e-learning modules for effective teaching and to help slow learners. A large number of study materials, course materials and books are prepared and published by faculty regularly. Faculties share their expertise as editors of journals, members of Boards of studies, question paper setters, examiners, Guides for conduct of research, NSS officers, fine arts coordinators and resource persons for seminars and conferences.

Student Profile

Currently there are around 4600 students admitted under various programmes. The college caters to the needs of students from rural, semi-urban and urban areas. Special preference is given to students who are physically challenged, child labour special school students, sports students and students of disadvantaged communities. The management provides scholarships to economically weak students and outstanding performers.

Teaching & Learning

Student centric methods of teaching are followed. Faculty use smart classes, online teaching and learning using Learning Management Systems like GSuite, ICT training materials, Self-prepared study materials, work-books, power point presentation, Case studies from the internet and resources from the library to effectively transact the curriculum besides using the lecturing method. Bridge course, personality development classes, remedial coaching, study materials for slow learners, counseling and mentoring to improve academic and holistic development of students. Library and laboratory resources, access to internet, learner-centric tasks like quiz, seminars, case studies, surveys, project work, internship training, field visits, and problem solving competitions in laboratories enrich the curriculum. Creative thinking, critical analysis, research culture are nurtured through debates, group discussions, research conferences, projects, and exhibitions. Invited expert lectures and student seminars help students to update their knowledge and skills. Field trips, Block placement training, Industrial Visits, Project Work, etc, add to experiential learning. Students also study cross-cutting courses like environmental studies, gender studies, and value education for holistic development. Special attention is given to research activities. A multipurpose / Language Lab provides regular training in English language skills to students. Special software and devices to support students with low vision to read books and online content and to convert them to and from Braille is available in the library. Students participate in Sports, Fine Arts, and other extra-curricular activities and have also received awards for their achievements. Several clubs enrich the students and help them to showcase their latent skills.

Infrastructural facilities

The college has a campus area of 9.04 (3.93 + 5.11) acres in the centre of the city. It has adequate infrastructure like classrooms, faculty rooms, an open air auditorium, two air-conditioned Seminar Halls (totally accommodating 1500, 150 and 350 persons respectively) a large playground with facilities to play outdoor games, 3 girls’ hostel blocks for accommodating around 1450 students and a cafeteria for refreshments, student support services like telephone facility, indoor games room, first aid cum Health Centre, Post box, back-up power supply, transport facilities and vehicle parking areas. There is also an exclusive ATM attached to a local bank branch for the use of staff and students. There is one general library and two departmental libraries, one for Computer Science and M.B.A. The libraries are fully digitized with bar coding facility and software offering OPAC services and library management services. We also subscribe to international journals and online resources like INFLIBNET & DELNET. There are around 53281 books in the libraries. The college has 6 computer laboratories with internet facilities housing 522 computers, a rich collection of printers and peripherals and licensed software pertaining to various programmes offered. 50 Mbps leased line facility and 1 Mbps broadband facility is also present for use of faculty, students and office. All infrastructural facilities are regularly maintained and upgraded.

Other support facilities

Special skill training given by the Career Guidance and Placement Cell, enables students to get placed during placement drives organized by the college. Entrepreneurship is also promoted as a part of training programmes by the EDC of the college. The college is a nodal centre of the IECD of the University for conducting vocational training programmes. The alumni association of the college meets twice every year. Alumni contribute to academic development through lectures, donations, scholarships and placement references. The college has a participative management policy with an objective to improve the quality of education through a perspective plan developed with foresight and support of academic staff committee and other staff members. The College has an Internal Quality Assurance Cell established in 2004, to take care of improvement and sustenance of quality in the institution. The IQAC monitors the executions of the academic plans and generates statistics on current performance of staff and students and compares it against benchmarks to analyze and identify reasons for setbacks in performance. Feedback from students and other stakeholders on teaching, curriculum etc is also taken into consideration. Suggestions for improvement are made at IQAC meetings and continuous monitoring done to ensure quality sustenance.
