About the Department

The PG and Research Department of Microbiology was established in 1996 as an undergraduate program and was subsequently upgraded to offer research degree (Ph.D.) in 2016. The department is committed to providing a comprehensive learning experience that integrates theoretical knowledge with strong practical skills, meeting the current demands of science and industry. It is supported by a team of eight dedicated faculty members with doctoral degrees and two have completed postdoctoral fellowships. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories featuring the latest and most sophisticated instruments, facilitating advanced research and hands-on training for students.

Department Highlights

  • The PG and Research Department of Microbiology at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, Tiruchirappalli, is a dynamic center of excellence in teaching, research, and innovation. The department has earned the Best Department Award from the Microbiologists Society of India for its outstanding contributions to microbiological education and research. The faculty members are actively engaged in advanced research in areas such as microbial biotechnology, nanotechnology, biofertilizers, antimicrobial agents, waste management, and environmental microbiology. The department has a commendable record of publications in Scopus and Web of Science indexed journals, numerous book chapters, and patents by the faculty and students. It regularly organizes international and national conferences, workshops, and seminars promoting scientific learning and entrepreneurship among students. The department also conducts training programs in mushroom cultivation, vermicomposting, and production of value-added microbial products, empowering students and rural communities through sustainable bio-entrepreneurship. Faculty members have received research grants, awards, and patents from recognized bodies and actively serve as reviewers and resource persons in reputed academic forums.

This practical application of knowledge is further strengthened by high success rates in NPTEL course examinations Recognition extends beyond research, with students earning Best Student Awards from the Microbiologists Society of India (MBSI) and achieving remarkable success in sports, yoga championships, and cultural festivals at district and state levels. Furthermore, students have consistently gained valuable hands-on experience through specialized internship programs in clinical diagnostics and in vitro fertilization, and have participated in national and international conferences, often securing top prizes in paper and poster presentations. This multi-faceted record of accomplishment underscores the department's commitment to nurturing well-rounded, skilled, and successful graduates.
